Our Vines and essentially the grapes!
We started looking at what type of vines we wanted to plant before the year began. Our goal was to have both white and red wine grapes on property. We know they take several years to build a good quality root system and each year is different from the last or next one coming up. Grapevines are so dependent on the soil, water, sun, wind, land, animals, care and just so many factors that could just make or break the season.
As such things go, we considered normal grapes, like your cabernet's, merlot, malbec, syrah, muscat, riesling. You get the idea. Well, we also didn't want to start with anything super susceptible to the most common diseases for Texas growing. Those being rot's and mildew's to a great degree. With our high humidity, everyone knows what happens in Texas with high humidity, and we didn't want to go there with our grapes yet. We chose some new varieties and a few older ones. We also did a few mainstream that could be a table grape or as a blender.
In summary, we want to make Five Trees a nice place to look out over the vineyard and enjoy some glasses of wine that were made from the vineyard. We know that it will take a few years to see that happen, but we will have wine onsite as soon as we open :).
Here are the vines we are growing.
Concord - Concord is the most famous American grape, described by Horace Greeley as "the grape for the millions" with vigorous, hardy and productive vines that produce medium-sized clusters bearing large blue-black berries. Concord grapes are tough skinned, flavorful and highly aromatic - an all purpose grape used to make grape jelly, juice, and grape flavored soft drinks. Concord is used for kosher wines and as a varietal or blender for sweet wines. - https://doubleavineyards.com/concord
Golden Muscat - An older Cornell release, Golden Muscat was first promoted as a table grape. It produces very large, well-filled clusters of large, oval, amber-colored berries. When fully ripe the flavor is rich, when not fully ripe, Golden Muscat has a tangy, citrus-like flavor. - https://doubleavineyards.com/golden-muscat
Opportunity - Opportunity is one of two new wine grape varietals developed by the University of Arkansas. Proving to grow extremely well in the Arkansas climate Opportunity has a higher tannin level that has been reported to potentially aid in longer storage in the bottle to condition and develop complexity. Opportunity grows in tight bunches without being very susceptible to disease. - https://doubleavineyards.com/opportunity
Enchantment - Enchantment is a red wine grape producing a nice dry, robust red. This medium-vigor vine has a very intense color that can be used in blending or as it's own varietal. Enchantment has shown consistent cropping and has proven to reach optimal pH and titratable acidity in areas with hot weather. - https://doubleavineyards.com/enchantment
Niagara - Niagara is an attractive, productive and vigorous variety with large, slipskin berries, juicy with a strong foxy flavor. Niagara is the leading green grape grown in the United States, used as a table grape and for juices and sweet wines. - https://doubleavineyards.com/niagara
St. Vincent - Named after the patron saint of Cote d'Or in the Burgundy region of France, St. Vincent can make wine similar to an Italian chianti with cherry and citrus flavors and a long and complex aftertaste. St. Vincent can also make an excellent sparkling rosé. - https://doubleavineyards.com/st-vincent
We look forward to seeing you at Five Trees.
